ON COLOUR

Black and White

Introducing a new series where colour expert Kassia St Clair examines two shades within our latest collection: black and white...

Sir Isaac Newton changed everything. In 1666, he split a ray of light into rainbows in his darkened room and, in an instant, altered the way the world thought about colour. About belief.

Newton, by proving that white light was built from colours, complicated things. After Newton, black and white were both more and less than they had been before.

They were expressions of light: its presence and its absence. They were also, theoretically at least, no longer colours, but counterpoints.
