The COS 5

Five iconic pieces. Five design principles.
Introducing COS’ signature styles of the season.

‘Timeless pieces that can be combined and styled in many ways forms a foundation for your wardrobe. They’re made to last, dependable and transitional.’

Karin Gustafsson,

What makes a wardrobe icon? At COS, the team use a set of five guiding design principles in the making of each of their seasonal signatures.

Perfected in the COS atelier, from stitch to seam.

Made responsibly with minimal impact on the planet.

Cut with the wearer in mind.

Carefully crafted using the finest fabrics.

Dress by COS.

Clean lines, soft volume.

When it came to creating the COS five, the team knew they wanted to push the boundaries of modern design. They sought to create a shirt dress with a fluid feel.

So, where to begin? Firstly, with the cut. The slight A-line silhouette and subtle shaping around the waist allow for an even distribution of volume throughout, while the circular hem and soft box pleating add to the cascading, feminine feel. Next was the fabric. Crafted from organic cotton, the dress has a hint of stretch for extra ease of movement and wearability. And finally, the details: don’t miss the oversized cuffs and collar, delicate half placket and – a COS favourite – pockets.

Shirt by COS.

A wardrobe icon, redefined.

‘What makes the perfect white shirt?’ was the starting point for COS’ womenswear team as they looked at ways to elevate and redefine the perennial COS favourite with a new oversized fit. ‘The white shirt is my favourite’ says Karin Gustafsson, Womenswear Design Director of the icons, ‘I love when classic pieces are redesigned and when silhouettes and volume fall in a subtle 3D way around your body.’

For this season’s take, bigger proved better. The team played with proportions through exaggerated details such as the oversized collar and cuffs, taking a more relaxed stance on traditional shirting – but still hinting at heritage with the curved side hem and gusset, a trope of classic Oxford shirting. Cut for a slightly A-line shape, the piece features an elegantly curved hem and an intricate, inverted box pleat that adds to the volume of the garment and complements the softly dropped shoulders.

Ensuring the shirt could be produced in a sustainable way was also front of mind for the design team. Crafted from pure organic cotton, which is grown from non-genetically modified seeds without chemical fertilisers or pesticides, this piece has a weighty feel which is soft to the touch – and is less likely to crease throughout its inevitable day-to-day wear.

Coat by COS.

Timeless style, cut for now.

The tailored coat is a wardrobe classic that has the power to elevate any outfit. Functionally it keeps you warm in the cold elements, but stylistically, a well-cut coat that fits perfectly to your body is key to streamlining layered looks.

Cut for a slightly oversized fit, this full-length double-breasted style was designed in-house by the COS design team in London. It’s crafted from a responsibly sourced, RWS certified wool mix, to ensure the wool comes from farms with a progressive and ethical approach to managing their land and animal welfare. The blend features a hint of recycled polyester for extra softness and durability, securing this piece’s place as a new wardrobe hero that you’ll be reaching for season after season.

Taking inspiration from classic menswear tailoring, the team added a wide oversized collar, sleek front pockets, and paid special attention to the lining. Look closer and you’ll see this piece looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside – thanks to the eye-catching contrast bindings between the lining and luxurious outer wool shell.

Jumper by COS.

Bold proportions, a relaxed feel.

With its longline funnel neck, dropped shoulders, and dense gauge, consider this jumper your ultimate chunky knit – and the perfect accompaniment to a pair of sleek leather trousers. Gauge simply refers to the number of stitches a garment has per inch – and this piece has a whole lot of stitches, ensuring warmth – and quality.

Known for its unparalleled softness, cashmere is both a winter staple and treasured investment. Plus, when properly cared for, it stands the test of time. Designing for longevity is a key principle at COS, and one of the reasons the team selected longer cashmere fibres for this style which are long-lasting and more durable. The cashmere is also undyed and traceable, meaning we can track it right back to the community it originated from.

The cashmere roll-neck jumper is available to buy in stores and will be back in stock online soon – check back for our latest new arrivals. You can shop similar styles in our cashmere edit and discover our straight-leg trousers straight-leg leather trousers here.

Suit by COS.

Impeccable tailoring, a modern interpretation.

Every woman needs a suit that’s not only part of their smart rotation but that can also be styled casually for every day. With its looser volume, soft fabric and fluid shape, the COS three-piece was designed to offer a softer perspective on classic menswear tailoring, ‘I love the proportion and how it is constructed to fall in an effortless way around the body,’ says Gustafsson.

Crafted from traceable RWS certified wool, it comprises of an oversized blazer that has been softly constructed for an unstructured look. The waistcoat adds a masculine, feel while the matching tailored trousers are cut for a relaxed fit with a wide, full leg. The result? A level of effortlessness which belies the craftsmanship that lies beneath, from the contrast bindings used in the lining to the brand’s unique hanger loop design.
